Is COWBOY BEBOP Still Relevant?

When I first sat down to watch “Cowboy Bebop” in 2001, afriend of mine described it to me as, “A show about a group of interplanetarybounty-hunters in the year 2071 who travel the solar system tracking down andlocking up the baddest criminals the future has to offer.”As someone who’s always held a kind of soft spot in my heartfor science fiction, I agreed to sit down and watch the show with my friend, thinking it would be a pleasant way to kill some time. What I didn’t know, what I couldn’t know, was that by thetime I had finished watching the series, I would come to regard it not as just another fun fantasticalaction/adventure sci-fi anime series (although it certainly was all thosethings) but rather as one of the most powerful, moving, intelligent, imaginative, well-paced, visionary television shows I’d ever seen in my entirelife

MARIA THE VIRGIN WITCH #1 — Special Review

The wholeopening scene has the basic set-up of every CASPER short ever, wherein terrifiedvillagers approach what they expect to be a terrifying monster, only to realizeshe’s a harmless little scamp who hilariously can’t live up to fearsome expectations. There’s similar humor then – – or at least humorous intent — in how this witch is a virgin, andtherefore far from the type of girl who’d ever be take congress with the devil. I supposethey could be trying to makesome high-concept satire of sexual politics and religion, et al, but……something about the other witches’ cocktail attire duringtheir little battlefield tea party makes me think that’s a far more seriousthan what they’re actually going for

DEATH PARADE #1 — Special Review

I see it being alittle too formulaic to write up from week to week, but it’s a good and atmospherically macabre change from the usual. And at least, unlikeASSASSINATION CLASSROOM, it’s actually… youknow… good.Watch this pilot and decide for yourself

ASSASSINATION CLASSROOM #1 — Special Review

Or maybe it was the strange way ourgooey yellow mascot’s hands/tentacles tended to look like the kind of cock ‘nballs the weird kid in reading class would draw all over the back leaf of hiscomposition notebook. This felt like what you’d get if you watched BATTLEROYALE with a stick of Elmer’s glue crammed up your nose. There are plenty of wonderfully bizarre shows that weaveweirdness together with a surrealist’s touch

JOJO’S BIZARRE ADVENTURE – BATTLE IN EGYPT #1 — Watch & Learn

The show might’vegained a new intro and outro, as well as an awkward sub-subtitle (JOJO’SBIZARRE ADVENTURE – STARDUST CRUSADERS – BATTLE IN EGYPT), but there’s a lackof change here that puts a point on how… comfortable the show is already feeling. The real hook of JOJO’s has lied in its leanunpredictability. When STARDUST CRUSADERS falteredlast season, it was when an episode-and-half of material was obviously drawnout to fill two episodes, and the filler’s getting flabbier

DRAGON BALL — The Red Ribbon Saga Didn’t End?

You know, I assumed the destruction of the Red Ribbon Army’sheadquarters would’ve marked the end of the “Red Ribbon Army Saga” – – but that’ll teach me not to consult theepisode guide.Goku’s little four-episode visit to Bulma’s home town wouldseem to constitute this arc’s epilogue, but the defeat of our alluringmistress-of-disguise doesn’t seem too conclusive actually. Also, when I do consult thatepisode guide, it seems the next arc’s going to be titled “the Commander BlueSaga” and – – remembering the RRA’s penchant for colorful names – – I’ll assume it’llbe Goku fighting another high-ranking officer in this outfit

BLEACH Ch. 611 Review

Although, seems sort of harsh to ask for pleasantries from a guy sprawled across the floor in pieces.Verdict 2/5This has not been a great start to the new year for the remaining members of the Shonen Trilogy — not sure if Shonen Duo works. BLEACH Ch. 618 Review

To confront the devil Yhwach, Captain Shunsui offers a deal with the devil everyone in the Soul Society both knows and fears. The GoodWould you like to play a game?Okay, I’m so pleased to see that Shunsui didn’t go into this negotiation with Aizen waving all the keys in front of him without any level of precaution. The discrepancy between both fronts of the story as far as pacing goes has really been taking its toll in recent weeks
